Unity Takes Guts: Why Building Bridges Is Worth the Risk
Unity requires courage, action, and truth. On Day 3 of the Novena for Peace, Unity, and Wisdom, we pray for boldness to build bridges, speak truth to power, and foster reconciliation. As Inauguration Day approaches, reflect on how unity can guide our nation toward healing and hope.
In his prayer to the Father, Jesus said, “That all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you” (John 17:21). This call to unity is not passive; it requires us to take action, to stand for what is right, and to speak truth to power, even when it’s complicated.
Unity in a Divided World
Working toward unity demands courage in a society marked by division. It requires facing difficult conversations, challenging injustices, and advocating for the marginalized. True unity is not about avoiding conflict or pretending differences don’t exist; it’s about addressing them honestly and with compassion.
Today’s prayer asks the Lord to “help us build bridges where there are walls.” Bridges are not built without effort, nor are walls torn down without resistance. Speaking up for justice and reconciliation may have consequences—misunderstandings, opposition, or rejection. Yet, these are the risks we take as followers of Christ, who himself faced rejection for proclaiming the truth.
A Prayer for Our Leaders
We also pray for our leaders, asking God to guide them in unity and courage. Leadership that seeks the common good often means standing against the status quo or advocating for voices that have been silenced. It requires humility, collaboration, and prioritizing justice over personal gain.
Reflection Questions
Where in your life is God calling you to act courageously for unity?
How can you speak truth to power while remaining rooted in love and compassion?
What risks will you take to build bridges and foster reconciliation?
Action for Today
Take one bold step toward unity in your personal or community life. This could mean addressing an injustice, standing up for someone overlooked, or initiating a conversation that requires courage. Trust that God will guide your words and actions.
Unity comes at a cost, but it is worth the effort. When we act courageously, speak truth to power, and seek reconciliation, we reflect the unity of the Father and the Son. In doing so, we become instruments of peace in a world longing for hope.
🙏 Lord, give me the courage to build bridges, speak truth with love, and stand for justice. Please help me to reflect on the unity you call for and heal the divisions around me. Amen.
